LEED V4 Workshop: Beyond the Requirements

In this full-day workshop participants will explore this latest version of LEED in the context of integrative design process. Through facilitated discussion and collaborative activities, attendees will learn the technical requirements of key LEED v4 credits. The facilitator will arm participants with sound advice for implementing LEED effectively so their projects can be exemplars of true sustainability and integrative design. This course will not be credit-by-credit review of LEED requirements. Instead, the workshop is organized by project phase, concept through occupancy, using a real project case study. The course is designed to allow attendees to discover the implications of LEED certification on the design, construction, and occupancy for their own projects.

W101 How to Perform Whole Building Air Leakage Testing

Air leakage testing is used to identify air leakage through the building envelope. Testing involves pressurizing a space with blower door fans to create a pressure differential across the building envelope. For qualitative tests, tracer smoke or an infrared camera can detect air leakage paths through the envelope. Attendees will learn how to identify when air leakage testing is appropriate and understand the procedure for performing whole building air leakage testing. The session will cover airtightness standards––notably ASTM E1186 and the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code––and the direction in which those standards are headed.
W102 Complete Street Redesign at a Major Midwest University Richard Michal, Butler University;

Butler University occupies 290 acres just north of downtown Indianapolis; 64 of those acres are impervious. Most of Butler's stormwater discharges directly into the adjacent waterways. The university is actively reducing its water footprint through green infrastructure practices that support its Campus Master Plan and ACUPCC Climate Action Plan. The panel will describe the design considerations––green infrastructure (porous asphalt bike lanes, linear rain gardens), energy efficiency, and multimodal transportation options––for the Sunset Avenue streetscape, which is being developed under the city’s RebuildIndy infrastructure program, as well as the project’s O&M considerations and public involvement.

The Sarah E. Goode STEM Academy illustrates the benefits of using an integrative design approach to gain energy efficiency and higher levels of sustainability without adding cost. Goode was based on the Urban Model High School prototype developed by the Public Building Commission of Chicago (on behalf of Chicago Public Schools). The panel will place this project in the context of four different high schools built by the same owner, in the same geographic area, with similar programs but which followed different approaches to the design process. The prototype high school was upgraded from LEED Silver to Platinum, due largely to improvements in energy efficiency, and at no additional cost.

This session will explore two passive houses in two very different climate zones. Domus Matris, or "Mother's House," now completing construction in Shorewood, Wis., is a single-family home for four that will accommodate family gatherings of up to 50. Universal design will enable the owners to age in place, while assisting in the care of their grandchildren. The second house, in St. Louis, Mo., sits in an area of cold, wet winters, hot summers, and high year-round humidity. Airtightness tests show that the building is almost10 times as tight as if built to ASHRAE 62.2-2003. Electrical usage, PV production, interior temperature/humidity, solar thermal production, and hot water usage are being monitored.

This session will provide attendees with an understanding of traditional post and beam construction, which uses wooden joinery to connect members, and its current form, which uses CNC (computer numerical control) digital technology. Panelists will explore the benefits of using timber framing––its aesthetic feel, physical strength, stability, durability, and longevity. The panel will describe how to use energy-efficient timber frame structures with high R-values and low air infiltration in coordination with structural insulated panels (SIPS) and other skin treatments. The use of reclaimed timbers will also be discussed. Attendees will learn how a rustic contemporary aesthetic can be created through innovation in the new digital fabrication technology.

This fast-paced session will profile some of Chicagoland's leading homes from the successful first GreenBuilt Home Tour. Attendees will hear from seven project teams in this PechaKucha-style format that will present key design and construction details. Case studies include homes that achieved certifications under Energy Star, LEED for Homes, National Green Building Standard, and Passive House.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s new Genome Science Building is the centerpiece of UNC’s Bell Tower District master plan. The university wanted the new building to serve as a campus link, uniting 1,600 parking spaces, an established chiller plant, and a stormwater management system. This session will explore the key questions that the design team and university officials considered: How much parking should be accommodated on site? Where should the chiller plant be located in order to maximize utility? What is the nature of the research, teaching, and learning that will take place in the new GSB? How will this development be integrated into the university's master plan, enhance campus life, and reinforce UNC’s core mission? Attendees will learn how the Building Team resolved these questions, while achieving a LEED-NC v2.2 Gold rating.

For the majority of buildings, the roof system is critical to the overall performance and success of the building envelope. Not only should the roof be the first line of defense against the weather and weather events, it should provide an energy-efficient, long-lasting, durable solution. The presenter will discuss how to achieve a resilient roof system in the Chicago area and the Midwest. The technical basis for the presentation will be RoofPoint, a roof rating system that can also serve as a design tool for resilient, energy-efficient, high-performing roof systems.

WMS Industries, an electronic gaming/amusement company, recently completed its Technology Development Center, in Chicago. The 120,000-sf, LEED Platinum facility won the ASHRAE Illinois Chapter 2012 Excellence in Engineering Award, thanks to an HVAC system that is producing energy savings of 28.5%/year. The panel will describe the facility's rooftop units, which employ evaporative-cooled condensers integrated into the packaged air-handling units. The panel will describe the process being used to collect trend data from the facility's overall operation, which will be used to calibrate the actual and baseline energy models and thereby maintain an efficient facility.
W205 Energy Benchmarking Policy: Best Practices & Next Steps Join Chicago Energy Benchmarking Working Group members to hear successes and challenges from Chicago Energy Benchmarking Ordinance implementation over the past year. The panel will discuss best practices and lessons learned from Chicago and cities across the U.S. in various stages of policy implementation. Attendees will also explore what's next for Chicago as the ordinance continues to roll out in 2015 and how buildings can begin to use their new energy benchmarking data to make informed decisions about future energy efficiene measures and investments.

Leveraging Smart Grid Technology to Transform Chicago’s Commercial Buildings The group will discuss the association’s new sustainability resource: The BOMA/Chicago Smart Grid Initiative. The first of its kind ever created, the panel will share early observations and key findings from this initiative and its implications for commercial buildings and businesses in Chicago (and eventually in other regions). Additionally, attendees will hear case studies of how building managers have leveraged smart grid technology to monitor buildings’ energy usage, save money and advance conservation efforts.

The panel will discuss how a world-class pediatric hospital prepared facilities personnel to transition from an existing facility to a new one; provided training for their existing team to handle a new facility; and educated facilities team members in the broader impact of utility costs and their personal role in the financial health of the healthcare organization. Panelists will describe how they developed new standard operating procedures and preventive maintenance programs. Attendees will learn how the team used retro-commissioning to perform post-construction analysis of the operational effectiveness of the facility. New energy-saving measures that were initiated after one year of operation will be discussed.

Operational rating methods such as Energy Star have been around for years, but asset ratings are brand new. Asset ratings compare a building's projected energy efficiency to a peer building, holding operational variables constant. Calculating accurate asset ratings of existing buildings can be complex and costly. This presentation will describe a recent national pilot study to develop innovative methodologies to overcome these problems for asset ratings. The research involved building calibrated energy models that not only allow peer comparison at the national level but also provide actionable results at the individual building level. Attendees will learn how to consider asset ratings using reliable, scalable, and cost-effective methodologies toward creating more energy-efficient buildings.

The LEED Platinum Iowa Utilities Board/Office of Consumer Advocate in Des Moines is an example of building design that mirrors the intent of the new LEED v4 Integrative Process Credit. Through intense integration and analysis, the IUB/OCA Building Team exceeded an EUI goal of 28.0 kBtu/sf. This presentation will demonstrate how a successful integrated process begins during predesign, continues through construction and occupancy, and provides the most efficient combination of systems and resource use. Attendees will be able to see actual examples of projects that achieved exemplary performance as a result of integrative design.

IBEW's vision was to create a sustainable Union Hall and Training Center as a LEED Gold living laboratory and classroom for staff, Junior Apprenticeship Training Program students, and the community. Eighty-sever percent of green space was preserved, bioswales and rain gardens were constructed, and the woods and pond native habitat were restored. JATC apprentices installed the PV system and continue to maintain and operate it. A 160-foot-tall 100 kW wind turbine, constructed by apprentices from IBEW and other trades, provides alternative power to the local utility and ongoing local training. Community groups and students are regular visitors to the center.

Panelists will discuss the role of technology in making informed decisions to optimize sustainable design for energy-efficient homes. They will discuss sustainable design techniques for climate-indexed projects using BIM, based on the case of an energy-efficient, aesthetically pleasing, and financially affordable single-family home. The experts will then focus on the second LEED Platinum home in Illinois, which used free energy modeling software that provided critical feedback early in design. The owner of the LEED Platinum home, which uses only 32% of the energy of a standard new home, will describe the benefits of the its design––its green roof, radiant-floor heating, energy-efficient lighting, natural daylighting, cement fiberboard siding, stormwater collection, and passive whole house ventilation.

The goal of Decarbonization Action Contracting is to dramatically reduce carbon emissions associated with existing and planned development within a defined district to triple net-zero: net-zero energy, waste, and carbon emissions. The DAC establishes a cascading financial framework, where the return on investment from an initial carbon abatement effort goes toward funding future efforts that may be more capital intensive, continuing onward until net-zero is ultimately reached. This session will describe an approach to carbon abatement and design for performance through an integrated, district-based strategy. The panel will lay out opportunities for creative finance to sustain efforts well into the future and how to structure agreements with multiple parties to enable a cascading financial framework.

ASHRAE 189.1 and the International Green Construction Code (IgCC) are "stretch codes" that encourage communities to go beyond typical code minimums for site sustainability, water use and energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, materials and resources, and construction operations. The presenters will explain the roles of green codes and green standards, how each can be used to achieve maximum benefit, and how they can best complement LEED and other sustainability initiatives. The presenters will explain the various objectives of ASHARAE 189.1, the IAPMO Green Plumbing and Mechanical Code Supplement, and the IgCC. Real-life examples of code adoption in several communities will also be explored.

Deep Energy Retrofits consider the interactions of all the systems in a building; they can yield energy savings of 50% or more. This course will identify incentive programs, tax credits, and emerging finance tools to offset the initial capital costs of such retrofits. The panel will discuss energy audits, benchmarking, and the effective use of energy modeling as a decision-making tool. Attendees will learn sequencing strategies for incorporating engineering consultants into the design process. The course will demonstrate that architects can learn to complete ASHRAE Energy Audit Level 1 and offer these services in their practices. Case studies will illustrate strategic approaches to incorporating consulting engineers into the design process.

Building with trees that are too small to mill can be more economical than building with steel or concrete. This session will provide lessons learned from 20 years of managing a 20-acre FSC sustainable forest and learning lab. Attendees will learn about several types of historic structures built using small-diameter timber. They will be able to name benefits to forest ecosystems and regional economies of building with small-diameter timbers and other mass-timber technologies. Technical considerations such as bending strength, fire rating, fire failure mode, and life cycle performance will be reviewed, as will testing at the USDA Forest Products Lab.
